Becoming an Everyday Ethicist

Amanda “Jo” Erven

What do I mean? Speaking the truth, even if it seems inconsequential… even if it is difficult… even if it means losing a friend or even a job.

Ethics in its simplest form, is knowing the difference between right and wrong and having the will and courage to act on it. We like to think of ourselves as being ethical, but the truth is, none of us are as ethical as we think we are.  This session is meant to create greater awareness of what it means to adhere to a code of personal ethics, even if.

Amanda’s approach breaks down our various “blind spots” around ethics… money, peer pressure, group think… so we can begin to understand and face our rationalizations, and change our behavior... so we can each become an “everyday ethicist.”

Learning Objectives:

You will

  • Gain an understanding of the "Big Me;" how society has changed and how has it likely changed the culture of our organizations.
  • Recognize that psychological research proves we are not as ethical as we think we are.
  • Discover how we often rationalize our behavior, what our blind spots are, and how you can start to anticipate and mitigate ethical problems.
  • Learn the characteristics of the "Everyday Ethicist", how to put the characteristics to work, and influence real culture change.

About Our Presenter

Amanda “Jo” Erven
Internal Audit Strategist, Management Consultant, CPE Trainer,
Higher Education Professor, Keynote Speaker, Author

Jo is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Internal Auditor, and a Certified Fraud Examiner who pushes the envelope of traditional auditing practices. She believes auditors should no longer be “reactive” and should focus on “proactive,” real value-add activities and ensure the utmost ethical behavior is occurring at organizations. Her trademarked approach to Internal Audit, Total Quality Auditing, was published in both book and workbook format in 2019 (entitled Total Quality Audit: How a Total Quality Mindset Can Help Internal Audit Add Real Value).  And she is also getting ready to publish her second book, entitled Our Choices: On the Road of Life and Leadership, due out by the end of 2019.

Personally, Jo is known for her proactive nature as well. After finding out she was positive for the breast and ovarian cancer gene mutation (BRCA1) in 2015, Jo underwent multiple preventative surgeries, including a double mastectomy in 2016. She believes knowledge is power and encourages others to take action, personally and professionally, through her engaging training and keynote presentations.  Read more about Jo and her Company on her website: www.AuditConsultingEducation.com.
